School Procedures

School Entry, Exit, and Hall Areas

Students are to enter the school at the bell using the doors assigned for their class. Classes should line up quietly before a designated teacher escorts them into the building.

Students must exit using assigned doors. An outside meeting place should be arranged to avoid congestion in hallways. Proper behaviour and courtesy are expected at all times.

  • Remove hats and visors upon entering.
  • Stay on the right side when walking in hallways.

Attendance

If a student is absent without notice, the school will:

  • Call home
  • Call the parent’s workplace
  • Call the emergency contact

To avoid this, report absences by calling the office at 519-452-8160.

For early pickup, send a note including date, time, and reason. Parents must sign students out at the office.

Seasonal Considerations

Students must have indoor shoes during winter months for safety and cleanliness. Dress appropriately for weather conditions during outdoor recess.

Lost and Found

A lost and found area is available at the school. Unclaimed items are donated periodically.

  • Label all belongings.
  • Avoid bringing valuables.
  • The school is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

Lunch Procedures

Students who stay for lunch must remain in designated areas. Daily changes require a note from home.

Lunchroom Expectations

  • Bring all needed items to the lunchroom.
  • Remain seated and speak quietly.
  • Ask permission to use the washroom.

Parents are encouraged to send nutritious, nut-free lunches. Use reusable containers to support a litterless environment.

Emergency School Closing

School closures will be announced on local radio starting at 7:00 a.m. Students will be dismissed according to emergency contact instructions if already at school.

Reporting to Parents

Grades 1–8 receive progress reports in November and report cards in January and June. Conferences occur before the December break.

Kindergarten families have conferences in November and receive reports in February and June.

Bicycles, Rollerblades, Skateboards, and Scooters

  • Use is at the student’s own risk.
  • Must not be ridden on school property.
  • Bikes should be locked at designated racks.
  • Walk bikes/scooters; carry skateboards.

Student Use of the School Phone

Students may use the phone for emergencies only, with staff permission. It cannot be used for forgotten items or routine communication.

Cell Phones and Electronic Devices

Students may bring devices at their own risk. Devices are only permitted for educational use with teacher approval.

  • No use during instructional time unless permitted.
  • No use in private areas (e.g., washrooms).
  • Devices may be confiscated if misused.

School Arrival

Students are expected to arrive on time. Lateness disrupts classroom routines and affects learning.

Students arriving after the first bell must report to the office for a late slip. Frequent lateness may result in consequences such as making up missed time or referral to an attendance counsellor.

Illness or Injuries at School

Staff will make sick or injured students as comfortable as possible while contacting caregivers. In serious situations, an ambulance may be called.

Please keep contact information up to date and do not send children to school when they are unwell. Students should stay home until they can fully participate in school activities.

School Safety

Playground

  • Supervision begins at 8:45 a.m.
  • Students should not arrive before supervision starts.
  • Students must play in designated areas.
  • Physical fighting or rough play is not permitted.

After School

The playground is not supervised after school. Students must leave school property promptly at dismissal.

Community members are encouraged to report concerns such as vandalism or unsafe behaviour to the school or police.

Physical Education

Students must wear clean running shoes for gym classes. Without proper footwear, participation is not permitted for safety reasons.

Fire Drills

Fire, evacuation, and severe weather drills are conducted regularly. All individuals in the building must follow procedures during drills.

School Volunteers

Volunteers are welcome to support school activities. Opportunities vary based on availability and interests.

All volunteers must complete a volunteer form and provide a Vulnerable Sector Check before working with students.

Criminal Background Checks

A criminal background check is required for all volunteers, including those assisting with field trips, classroom activities, or transportation. Please contact the office for details.

Visitors to the School

All visitors must report to the office upon arrival and sign in if staying for any period of time.

Parents picking up students regularly should inform the teacher in writing.

Parking

  • Walk to school where possible.
  • Use designated drop-off zones only.
  • Do not park in drop-off or bus loading zones.
  • Watch carefully for pedestrians.

Head Lice (Pediculosis)

Head lice are a common nuisance but not a health hazard. The school follows established procedures to manage cases discreetly.

Students may return to school once there is no evidence of lice or nits. If concerns arise, school staff may perform a brief head check and contact parents as needed.
