Pearson School for the Arts: Student Handbook
The program at Pearson provides an integrated academic and enriched arts experience for students. The academic program follows Ministry of Education guidelines and includes Language, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies (History and Geography). These subjects are enhanced and often integrated with the arts: dance, drama, visual arts, and music (wind, strings, piano, and vocal).
Students are expected to actively participate in all areas of the arts program, including performances both during and outside regular school hours. The program requires strong commitment due to increased homework and daily practice.

Code of Behaviour
General Principles
Everyone should be treated with respect and dignity.
Everyone has the right to be themselves and be treated fairly.
Everyone has the right to feel safe.
Everyone has the right to express thoughts and feelings respectfully.
General Expectations
All members of the school community are expected to act responsibly and respectfully at school, school events, and on school transportation.
Expectations
- Respect others and accept responsibility for your actions
- Resolve conflict in non-violent and fair ways
- Help others and contribute to a positive learning environment
- Complete assignments and support classmates
Prohibited Behaviours
- Bullying, discrimination, or harassment of any kind
- Possession of weapons, drugs, or alcohol
- Damage or theft of property
- Misuse of technology or unauthorized access
Consequences
Violations may result in disciplinary action, including warnings, parent contact, loss of privileges, suspension, or further consequences according to board policy.
Dress Code
Students come from diverse backgrounds, and clothing is an important form of personal identity. All students should feel safe, respected, and included.
Dance
- Black t-shirt and black shorts or dance pants
- Bare feet may be required
Drama
- Comfortable clothing for movement
- Follow costume instructions for performances
- Care for school-provided costumes
Gym
- Proper athletic clothing and running shoes required
- Remove jewelry or secure it safely
- Secure long hair
Performance Attire
Students must wear designated performance clothing (red sweater, black polo, black bottoms, black shoes).
School Procedures and Property
Performances
Participation in performances is required. These may occur outside regular school hours.
School Property
Students must respect and care for all school property, including instruments and materials.
Attendance
Parents must report absences using the Safe Arrival system before 9:30 a.m.
Leaving School
Students must be signed out by a parent or guardian to leave early.
Lunchroom Policy
Students remain at school during lunch (12:30–1:10 p.m.). Eating and supervised outdoor time are scheduled.
Younger students must remain on school grounds unless signed out. Older students require a signed release form to leave.
Library Learning Commons
- Maximum of three items may be borrowed
- Loan period: three weeks
- Lost or damaged items must be replaced
Integrated Arts Program Demands
Dance
Students express ideas through movement and must wear appropriate attire.
Drama
Focus on communication, creativity, and performance skills.
Music
Students must bring and care for instruments and participate fully.
Visual Arts
Students develop skills across media and maintain a sketchbook and portfolio.
Computer Policy
General Use
- Use only your assigned account
- Respect privacy and school rules
- No downloading or copying copyrighted material
- No misuse or damage to equipment
Internet Safety
- Do not share personal information online
- Report any inappropriate content to a teacher
