General School Description
Lester B. Pearson School for the Arts was established in 1989. It offers an enriched arts program in dance, drama, visual arts, and music, alongside a full academic curriculum aligned with Thames Valley District School Board standards.
All students participate in all four arts disciplines. The program promotes creativity, artistic awareness, and lifelong appreciation of the arts.
School Organization
The school has ten classrooms (two per grade from Grades 4 to 8), with approximately 28 students per class.
Staff includes a principal, administrative assistant, custodial team, and 15 teachers, including specialists in the arts.
Goals
The school focuses on creativity as a core element of arts education. Staff support student growth by integrating arts into academic learning and providing creative opportunities across subjects.
Students experience an extended school day and a rigorous schedule that includes performances, arts training, and academic work.
Co-instructional Activities
Students participate in performances in dance, drama, and music, and artwork is frequently displayed in the community.
Additional opportunities include athletics (cross-country, basketball, track and field, wrestling) and extracurricular programs such as chess.
The Pearson Singers perform nationally and internationally, including venues such as Carnegie Hall and major festivals.
Noteworthy Items
Students represent the school at community events, festivals, performances, and competitions. Regular assemblies and annual productions showcase student work.
Volunteering
The school welcomes parent and community volunteers for events, field trips, and school initiatives. Volunteers also support arts programming through costumes, props, and performances.
Student Achievement
Assessment and evaluation are ongoing and support student learning. Teachers use a variety of methods, including observation, tests, and project work, to evaluate progress and guide instruction.
