Our History: The “Red Cross Hut” (1920–1958)

Early Beginnings (1920–1921)

On June 23, 1920, the Board of Education approved the purchase of a building called the “Red Cross Hut” from the Red Cross Society.

• The hut was located at Carling's Heights.
• It provided immediate classroom space for school-aged children in Northeast London.
• The purchase price was $2,000.

The building was moved to a property on Quebec Street near Oxford Street, which the Board had purchased in 1919 for $5,000.

Two additional rooms were added, creating a four-room school.

Opening of the School

• The school opened on September 1, 1920 with two classrooms.
• Two more classrooms opened in January 1921.

School Leadership

• Miss Marjorie Tolhurst — First Principal
• Mrs. Winifred McNaughton — Principal from 1923 to 1949

Cost of the School

The estimated cost for purchasing, moving, and expanding the building was $15,000.

Due to rising costs at the time, the final total was closer to $20,000.

Naming the School

The school was officially named Knollwood School on August 17, 1920.

Growth and Community Use

The school served younger students in the area until June 1, 1949.

As enrollment increased:

• Additional classroom space was needed
• Some classes were held in nearby church basements

Transition to a New School

A new school, Knollwood Park Public School, opened in September 1949.

After this:

• The original building was leased for other uses

Reopening and Final Years (1951–1958)

• The school reopened in September 1951
• It operated as an annex until June 1958

Mr. O. H. Banks served as principal of both schools during this period.

Closure and Replacement

Over time, the building required major repairs and could no longer meet the needs of the community.
