Secondary English as a Second Language (ESL) and English Literacy Development (ELD) Non-Credit Courses

The Secondary ESL and ELD non-credit summer courses are open to current secondary school day students. These courses will be held at Eagle Heights Public School as part of the Newcomer Family Summer School program.

Course Description:  These non-credit courses provide secondary English Language Learners (ELLs) at the beginning levels of proficiency with opportunities to improve their oral language, reading and writing skills through a variety of rich, experiential learning opportunities in the local community.  Secondary ESL A and ELD A students will develop language skills contextualized by weekly field trip opportunities (1 full day per week). ELLs who are approaching STEP 1 or are on STEP 1 are ideal candidates for this course. 

ELDAO is for students at the beginning level of proficiency in the English Literacy Development program who have had limited access to schooling.

ESLAO is for students at the beginning level of proficiency with age-appropriate schooling who are building on their previous education to learn English.

This program will run 4 half days plus one full day each week as follows:

9 a.m. to 12 p.m. daily - 4 days per week    PLUS

9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  - 1 day per week (weekday to be determined)

General Information and Expectations
  1. Registration closes June 26, 2019 at 4 p.m.  *Late registrations will not be accepted.
  2. Students are expected to be punctual and attend every day of the program Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. (4 days/week) PLUS from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (1 day/week).
  3. For TVDSB students, the parent/legal guardian or student over the age of 18 must ensure the student’s home school has their current address, phone/cell number(s), email address and emergency contact information on file. All changes must be reported immediately to the home school. The Summer School office cannot make changes to this information.
  4. Students are responsible for their own transportation.
  5. TVDSB reserves the right to cancel this program if there is insufficient enrolment. The parent/legal guardian will be contacted if there is a cancellation.
  6. Students are expected to adhere to the standard rules of academic integrity and follow the Summer School Code of Conduct. Behaviour that is contrary to a positive learning environment could result in a student's removal from the program.
