Secondary ESL In-Class Credit Courses

Secondary English as a Second Language (ESL) in-class summer credit courses are open to all secondary day school students and all adult students who are currently working towards completing their Secondary School Diploma.

Registration opens Monday, April 1, 2019 and closes Wednesday, June 26, 2019.

COURSE OFFERINGS

 There are three full credit ESL courses being offered as follows:

  1. ESL Drama - ADA1OA, Grade 9, Open
    The ESL Drama course is designed to help students improve their reading, speaking and listening skills and is intended for students going into ESL B, C, or D. 

    This course provides opportunities for students to explore dramatic forms and techniques, using material from a wide range of sources and cultures. Students will use the elements of Drama to examine situations and issues that are relevant to their lives. Students will create, perform, discuss, and analyse drama, and then reflect on the experiences to develop an understanding of themselves, the art form, and the world around them.

  2. ESL Drama – ADA2OA, Grade 10, Open
    The ESL Drama course is designed to help students improve their reading, speaking and listening skills and is intended for students going into ESL B, C, or D.

    This course provides opportunities for students to explore dramatic forms, conventions, and techniques. Students will explore a variety of dramatic sources from various cultures and representing a range of genres. Students will use the elements of drama in creating and communicating through dramatic works. Students will assume responsibility for decisions made in the creative and collaborative processes and will reflect on their experiences.

  3. Literacy Skills: Reading and Writing, ELS2OA, Grade 10, Open
    The Literacy Skills course is intended for ESL D and E students transitioning into mainstream classes. This course will further develop literacy and prepare students for the literacy test.

    This course is designed to help students strengthen essential reading and writing skills, providing them with the extra literacy support they need in order to graduate. Students will read informational, graphic, and literary texts, with a focus on locating information, identifying main ideas and supporting details, building vocabulary, and consolidating skills in the application of key comprehension strategies. The course will also help students develop core learning strategies.
Summer School General Information and Expectations
  1. Students may only take ONE Summer School Credit Course, regardless of the mode of delivery.
  2. Students under 18 years of age must have parent/legal guardian approval to register for summer school.
  3. Regular attendance and punctuality are critical for success at summer school. Due to the compressed time frame of summer school, daily attendance and punctuality are mandatory. Accommodations will not be made for family vacation plans or personal activities. Exam dates cannot be rescheduled or modified.
  4. International Students are required to pay Summer School Course Fees prior to registering for a summer school course. See details under Registration Information.
  5. Students are responsible for their own transportation.
  6. Students are expected to adhere to the standard rules of academic integrity and follow the Summer School Code of Conduct. Behaviour that is contrary to a positive learning environment could result in a student's removal from summer school. See the Summer School Code of Conduct.
Registration Information and Forms

Registration opens Monday, April 1, 2019.
We recommend that you register early to secure a spot in your preferred course. Once a course is full a wait-list will be established and used on a first-come, first-served basis. Also, please be aware that a course may be cancelled if there is insufficient enrolment for the course.

Registration closes Wednesday, June 26, 2019 at 4:00 p.m.
Late registrations will not be accepted.

Grade 8 students starting Grade 9 at a secondary school in September should speak to the Learning Support Teacher (LST) or Guidance Lead at their current elementary school if they are interested in registering for an In-Class Secondary ESL summer course.

International Students:
Students who are not Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents are required to pay Summer School Course Fees prior to registering for a summer course. The 2019 fees are $1750.00 for a full credit course.

Payment must be made in person at G.A. Wheable Centre - Summer School Office, 70 Jacqueline St, London, (Monday to Friday 8:30 -11:30 a.m. or 1-3 p.m.) by one of the following payment methods:

  • Money order or bank draft made payable to Thames Valley District school Board
  • Cash (must be exact amount, we cannot provide change)
  • Debit (one transaction only, daily limit must allow for full payment)

A receipt will be issued at the time of payment.

  • Before printing the registration form, please ensure all of the required fields have been completed. To save paper, please print the form two-sided, if possible.
  • Once printed, the registration form must be hand signed by the student, and by the parent/legal guardian if student is under the age of 18.
