Academy for Student Athlete Development (ASAD)

What is ASAD?

The Thames Valley District School Board (TVDSB) has joined a unique and innovative initiative to help more aspiring student athletes achieve athletic and academic success while staying close to home, families, and friends.

The Academy for Student Athlete Development (ASAD) is a program designed to support high school aged student-athletes participating in high performance sports as they strive for success at regional, provincial, national, and international levels of competition.

How ASAD works

ASAD is a program that allows students to earn academic credit while receiving daily strength and conditioning or sport specific training. Student athletes attend the ASAD London campus, with the remaining half day spent at the student’s TVDSB school.

Each athlete at ASAD is considered a full-time, secondary student. This ensures eligibility and preparation for next level placement in Canada, the United States and internationally for sports and education.

Academics

Student studying in a classroom with a laptopEvery student athlete at ASAD completes academic coursework in line with the provincial Ministry of Education curriculum, maintaining their pathway of 30 academic credits to graduation. Student timetables are established by the home school Guidance Departments in collaboration with the ASAD teachers and/or support staff.

  • Each school day, students participate in two academic periods at ASAD, and two academic periods at their home school.
  • At ASAD, students work towards obtaining one Health and Physical Education credit and one additional credit per semester which is delivered and/or supported by a TVDSB teacher.
  • Google Classroom, Brightspace and Chromebook supports are provided in the ASAD classroom environment.
  • Students are able to maintain their academic pathway for post-secondary destinations.
Athletics

Girl student pushing weights on sled in weight roomStudent-athletes get a tailored athletic development plan from ASAD. We work with Provincial and National Sport Organizations to ensure alignment with the Long-Term Athlete Development Model for each sport and each individual sport’s high performance pathway.

This includes:

  • Sport Specific Technical Training
  • Strength and Conditioning
  • Nutrition Seminars
  • Sports Psychology
  • Athlete Mental Health Awareness Training and Support
  • Physical Literacy and lifestyle management

ASAD student athletes are encouraged to participate on their high school sport teams. Because all ASAD student athletes attend the home school of their current residence, many remain eligible for regional and provincial high school sport competition.
We are proud to have local coaches who are highly recommended by their respective Provincial or National Sports Organizations. Our coaches are certified through the National Coach Certification Program or Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (NCCP or CSCS) at the Train to Compete level.
