Addition and building renewal to begin at Kettle Creek Public School

Posted February 2, 2019

Construction is expected to begin soon on significant improvements to Kettle Creek Public School in Port Stanley to enhance accessibility and provide the best physical environment for student learning and well-being.

The approximately $5.5-million project, approved by the Ministry of Education on February 1, 2019, includes a new library and classrooms, enhancements to the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system, as well as upgraded lighting, flooring, paint and trim.

Important upgrades such as barrier-free washrooms, ramps and doorways will insure the school meets Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) standards.

TVDSB hopes to expedite the project to take advantage of the upcoming construction season.

Important message to the Kettle Creek Public School community

On May 23, 2017, the Thames Valley Board of Trustees approved recommendations of the Elementary Public Accommodation Review (EPAR-01) that included “an addition and renovations be constructed for student accommodation and program enhancement…” at Kettle Creek Public School.

The project includes construction of a new library, with the old library being repurposed as classroom space. TVDSB has proposed funding the project with its own surplus budget dollars resulting from years of careful fiscal management by the Board.

In June 2018, a newly elected provincial government immediately launched a comprehensive review of education priorities and funding. Subsequently, many school construction projects across TVDSB and across Ontario have been delayed – including construction at Kettle Creek and the construction of a new school in southeast St. Thomas.

The Ministry has not yet indicated when it will complete its review of the business case for the Kettle Creek, or when the board may submit a request for funding of a new school in southeast St. Thomas.

As a result, the proposed new southeast St. Thomas school and child care centre will not open in September 2020 as expected, and students at Kettle Creek Public School who would have transferred to the new school will remain at their current school.

More information will be posted on the school website as it becomes available.
