Donate Securities

The Canada Revenue Agency does not apply capital gains tax on donations of publicly traded securities. Capitals gains are the increase in the value of your securities over the price you paid at purchase.

When you sell your shares for cash, you're responsible for the tax due on the gain, even if you plan to donate the proceeds from the sale. However, if you donate the securities 'in-kind' (unsold) you avoid paying capital gains taxes and receive a charitable tax receipt for the fair market value of the securities on the date of the sale (note: charities cannot 'hold' securities so the sale will be made the day the securities are received).

Securities donated through CanadaHelps will be subject to an administration fee.

Donations of securities through our office will not incur any additional fees. Donate securities through our office directly by contacting Jackie Ellefsen at 519-452-2000 extension 20202.

Award Payment
There are three different options for award payments.
  1. Award donations can be made on an annual basis. For example, if you decide on an award of $500, you can send in $500 each year. TVEF will send you an annual reminder note. Donations must be received by March 31 each year the award is to be distributed.
  2. Award donations can be made in one lump sum. For example, if you decide on an award of $500 over the next five years, you can make a donation of $2,500 and TVEF will distribute the funds on an annual basis.
  3. A lump sum can be donated, invested, and the annual investment income can be used for award distribution. This method ensures the award will continue for a significant period of time and is subject to investment administration fees.
