Education Foundation Ways to Help

Donate Securities

The Canada Revenue Agency does not apply capital gains tax on donations of publicly traded securities. Capitals gains are the increase in the value of your securities over the price you paid at purchase.

When you sell your shares for cash, you're responsible for the tax due on the gain, even if you plan to donate the proceeds from the sale. However, if you donate the securities 'in-kind' (unsold) you avoid paying capital gains taxes and receive a charitable tax receipt for the fair market value of the securities on the date of the sale (note: charities cannot 'hold' securities so the sale will be made the day the securities are received).

Securities donated through CanadaHelps will be subject to an administration fee.

Donations of securities through our office will not incur any additional fees. Donate securities through our office directly by contacting Jackie Ellefsen at 519-452-2000 extension 20202.

Create an Award or Scholarship

Thank you for considering an award or scholarship for students at the Thames Valley District School Board (TVDSB). This guide will walk you through the decisions required to setup your award and outline options for tailoring criteria and processes to your specific wishes as a donor.

For more information, please contact awards facilitator, Jane Winsky at 519.452.2000 x20204

Steps to Setting up an Award
1. Review Award Set-up Decisions (below).

2. Contact Jane Winsky, award facilitator, to discuss details.
3. Determine payment options (see options below) and send in award donation to TVEF.
4. Sign TVEF Award Agreement Form.

Congratulations - the award setup process is complete! TVEF staff will ensure the award is communicated to guidance counsellors at the applicable school(s), organize selections committees, issue award cheques and forward any student thank you letters to you.

Award Set-up Decisions
  1. Award name - choose a name for your award. You may choose to use a name (to honour a loved one or colleague) or a name based on the award criteria (Fine Arts Award, for example).
  2. Specific to - decide who will be eligible to apply for this award. Many donors choose to provide awards to specific schools or counties.
  3. Amount of award - decide how many students will receive the award, and how much will be distributed to each student. Specific payment details are outlined below.
  4. History - please provide a brief description of the award background. You may want to include honoree details, family history or award conception.
  5. Criteria - decide on the award criteria for applicants. Some examples include:
    1. Academic achievement
    2. Post secondary destination (for example, college for music, or university for physics)
    3. Attitude
    4. Community involvement
  6. Selections process - in most cases, donors choose to use the selections committees organized and managed by TVEF. However, alternative arrangements can be discussed if you would like to create a selections process of your own.
  7. Procedure for applying - TVEF has created a standard application form for TVDSB awards and scholarships. Should your award require special information, TVEF will assist you in creating a unique application form.
  8. Deadline - each school will create their own deadline for award applications and we encourage all award donors to follow this timeline.
  9. Special requests - many donors choose to present the award at commencement each year, or attend the ceremony. If you would like to be involved in the ceremony or have any other special requests, please make note and we will make every attempt to accommodate your wishes.
Award Payment
There are three different options for award payments.
  1. Award donations can be made on an annual basis. For example, if you decide on an award of $500, you can send in $500 each year. TVEF will send you an annual reminder note.
  2. Award donations can be made in one lump sum. For example, if you decide on an award of $500 over the next five years, you can make a donation of $2,500 and TVEF will distribute the funds on an annual basis.
  3. A lump sum can be donated, invested, and the annual investment income can be used for award distribution. This method ensures the award will continue for a significant period of time and is subject to investment administration fees.
