Copyright Matters

The Thames Valley District School Board (TVDSB) wishes to encourage awareness of and respect for copyright in our education system.

For more details, download a copy of Copyright Matters: Some Key Questions & Answers for Teachers, produced by the Council of Ministers of Education, the Canadian School Boards Association and the Canadian Teachers' Federation.

For the purpose of education, TVDSB staff and volunteers may communicate and reproduce short excerpts from copyright-protected work. A short excerpt means:

  • no more than 10% of a copyright-protected work (such as a literary work, musical score, sound recording, or audiovisual work)
  • one chapter from a book
  • a single article from a periodical
  • an entire artistic work (such as a painting, print, photograph, diagram, map, chart, and plan) from a book or periodical publication
  • an entire newspaper article or page an entire single poem or musical score from a copyright-protected work containing other poems or musical scores
  • an entire entry from an encyclopedia, annotated bibliography, dictionary or similar reference work

Excerpts may be provided to each student enrolled in a class or course:

  • as a class handout
  • as a posting to a learning or course management system that is password protected or otherwise restricted to students of a school or post-secondary educational institution
  • as part of a course pack

Copying or communicating short excerpts from the same copyright-protected work, with the intention of copying or communicating substantially the entire work, is prohibited.

Fair Dealing Guidelines

It is the intent of the Thames Valley District School Board to comply with the Fair Dealing Guidelines as developed by the Council of Ministers of Education Canada Copyright Consortium. TVDSB communicates the Fair Dealing Guidelines to all school locations on an annual basis in order to ensure that all staff understand the obligations of the school board.
