Special Olympics offers a day of fun and friendly competition for Thames Valley students

Starting next week, Thames Valley District School Board (TVDSB) students will enjoy athletic events, fellowship, and fun at the annual Special Olympics. 

Held June 10 and 11, 2025, at Western Alumni Stadium, more than 1,400 students and 1,300 peer coaches from 74 elementary and 26 secondary schools across the board are registered for this year’s event.   

“The Special Olympics is one of the many ways TVDSB champions equitable and inclusive opportunities for all. Participants need to feel welcomed, respected, and part of their school communities,” said Bill Tucker, Interim Director of Education for TVDSB. “We believe the Special Olympics inspires positive and lasting change in the lives of athletes, families, coaches, volunteers and everyone who cheers on these incredible athletes.”  

Elementary students will compete on Tuesday, June 10 and secondary students will compete on Wednesday, June 11.  Rain dates are June 12 and 13.  Both days begin with opening ceremonies at 10:15 a.m. followed by track and field events and other special activities. 

Events include: 

  • Wheelchair races  
  • Track races (50m, 80m and 200m) 
  • Field events such as standing jump (elementary only), long jump, softball throw and shot put (secondary only) 
  • Special events (a variety games for athletes with varying abilities)?

  • Secondary: June 11, 10 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
