LDSS student set to compete at Special Olympics Canada Summer Games
Thames Valley District School Board is thrilled to highlight Lord Dorchester Secondary School student athlete Andrew (AJ) Manning’s national debut at the Special Olympics Canada Summer Games this August in Calgary.
At the Special Olympics Ontario provincial qualifiers held this past July in Brantford, AJ captured three gold medals, dominating the 100m sprint, long jump, and mini javelin. He also earned a strong fifth place finish in shot put, rounding out an impressive multi-event performance.
Following his standout summer, AJ was officially invited to join Team Ontario, kicking off a new level of training and preparation. He now trains twice a week in adaptive fitness at Thames Valley Children’s Centre, works out regularly at a local gym, and practices alongside fellow London-area Special Olympics athletes.
“AJ has participated in the Special Olympics since he was four years old,” said his mother, Terri Manning. “He discovered track and field at age eight, and watching his confidence and skills grow year after year has been amazing. His family and community are so proud of how far he has come and everything he’s accomplished.”
“AJ is a positive and motivating presence at Lord Dorchester,” said Principal Renee Shave, “He approaches every challenge with enthusiasm, determination, and a can-do attitude, while always encouraging those around him to give their best effort. His involvement in the Special Olympics highlights not only his athletic abilities, but also his dedication, resilience, and leadership. AJ truly leads by example, and we are excited to see what he will do next!”
