Forty Thames Valley District School Board students will showcase their creativity, research and leadership skills while getting a hands-on look at campus life during the Scotiabank Scholars Pitch Fair on Friday, July 10, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Huron University.

The Pitch Fair serves as the culminating event of the week-long Scotiabank Scholars Summer Camp for grade 11 and 12 students. Scholars experience university life on campus as they research, create and present original projects inspired by real-world issues related to water, with help from the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority. From environmental sustainability to artistic and social interpretations, each presentation reflects the unique interests and perspectives of its creator.

The Scotiabank Scholars program is a unique partnership between Huron University, Scotiabank and the Thames Valley District School Board. The program is designed to break down barriers to post-secondary education and highlight post-secondary pathways through hands on-campus experiences and firsthand exposure to university life.

The program supports students from communities that have historically faced barriers to post-secondary participation, including low-income, minoritized, Indigenous, newcomer and first-generation students.

"As a TVDSB employee, we aim to build each student’s tomorrow, and the Scotiabank Scholars program does this in such a profound way," said Sarah Hoy, a TVDSB educator and co-creator of the program alongside fellow educator Robert Gillespie. "Students have the opportunity to earn their English credit through an innovative approach to education, teaching them to redefine what’s possible. They finish the course with a greater sense of self, community, and global stewardship."

"What always stands out is the partnerships. Thames Valley, Huron University, Scotiabank, Upper Thames River Conservation Authority – everyone works together for the sole purpose of supporting these students," said Robert. "Every aspect is all about the students."

Following the presentations, participants and guests will gather for a closing ceremony.
