Last Friday, A.B. Lucas Secondary School held its annual Relay for Life fundraiser benefitting the Canadian Cancer Society, pushing the school past an incredible milestone: $2 million raised as a school community over the past 19 years.

Over 650 students and staff canvassed and organized fundraising events throughout the spring, collectively raising an outstanding $168,206.79 and exceeding their fundraising goal for the year.

A.B. Lucas is the top school in Canada in Relay for Life fundraising, and the first and only school nationwide to reach $2 million raised. The school has a strong legacy of philanthropy and community outreach, teaching students the value of empathy, leadership and social responsibility.

Students led a variety of fundraising activities to meet their ambitious goal, including dances, bingo and ping pong tournaments.

Grade 12 student leads Brooke, Lexi and Lily were recently interviewed by CBC London about this incredible milestone.

“It’s indescribable,” said Lily King of the school’s achievement. “If it can help one family have an easier go at their journey with cancer, that’s all that matters.”

“As always, the Lucas community came through in just an incredible way,” said Lexi Webster. “I think what is truly the most impactful about this event is we get to see the impact that young people are willing to make on the world around them, for the people they love and for people they don’t event know.”

“I’ve always loved getting involved in my community,” said Brooke Rhiger. “It’s such a big feat for our school. I knew it was something I wanted to get involved in and help with, because it’s such an incredible cause.”

The school is already looking forward to next year’s fundraiser. “We’re starting to prepare our younger grades, so they can follow in our footsteps like we followed in the seniors’ footsteps before us,” said Lily. She shared her advice for younger students joining the cause: “Always stay true to why you’re doing this.”
