Thames Valley Trustees unanimously supported changing the name of Ryerson Public School to Old North Public School at Tuesday’s Board Meeting. Ryerson P.S. was part of a broad review of all schools named after individuals to ensure they reflect the Board’s commitment to human rights, equity and inclusive learning environments. 

Ryerson P.S. was named after Egerton Ryerson, considered the architect of Ontario’s public education system in the 1840s. However, Ryerson was also a key influence on the creation of the residential school system for Indigenous children.

“On behalf of First Nations and Indigenous people, this change is long overdue,” said Indigenous Trustee Carol Antone, who seconded the original motion to change the name of Ryerson PS.

The new name was chosen using the Board’s public process for renaming schools. School and community members were invited to submit suggestions to replace the Ryerson name. A Selection Committee made up of a school members, trustees and First Nations community members then selected a short list of three names which were put forward to the school community to vote on. Old North Public School was the first choice of survey respondents, receiving 77 percent of the votes. 

“I would like to thank the selection committee, and in particular the school community for their participation in the renaming process,” said Trustee Peter Cuddy. “It was an important process and I appreciate your diligence on choosing a name that ensures all students and staff feel safe and welcomed at school.”

Plans are underway to update school signage, logo and mascot.
