Thames Valley’s Board of Trustees appointed William A. (Bill) Tucker as Director of Education and Secretary of the Board effective January 1, 2008.
Bill has been an employee of the TVDSB since its inception in 1998 but was employed by the Board of Education for the City of London since 1979 as an educator.
Prior to his appointment, he was Superintendent of Education, Operations Services/Human Resource Services. He has also held a supervisory position in the areas of Special Education and School and Community Services – Program Services.
Before becoming Superintendent of Education, Bill served as Principal at Locke’s Public School, St. Thomas; Edward Street Public School, St. Thomas; Wilfrid Jury Public School, London; and Sir Winston Churchill Public School, London.
In addition to his work for the system in London, Elgin and Oxford, Bill also has a wide set of community contacts across the Valley. This has included the position of President - Madame Vanier Children’s Services Board of Directors, and membership on the Governance Committee of the School and Community Intervention Program in Elgin County.
He has also served on the Developmental Disabilities Division Advisory Committee at the University of Western Ontario; has been a member of Community Living London; served as a Board of Education Representative for London Children’s Connection; and has been a Board member of the London and Middlesex Children’s Aid Society, Women’s Community House, and Second Stage Housing.
“Bill Tucker has exceptional people skills, and understands the importance of relationships – with parents and a wide range of community partners – in helping students achieve success.,” says Trustee Peggy Sattler. “He has our full support, and that of the system.”
Bill Tucker was not only a teacher and principal in TVDSB schools but was also a student in the London system. He came to the city from Goderich as a child and graduated from Clara Brenton Public School and Oakridge Secondary School before graduating from the University of Western Ontario, the University of Windsor and earning a Master’s of Education (Educational Psychology) at UWO.
“As a parent and an educator, I come to the table as a person ready to support the front line workers of our organization, who are the teachers, administrators and support staff. All of us, as a team, share a common goal which is to bring out the best in every student in Thames Valley. I believe that all students can learn and that all of us can lead from our positions if we work collaboratively as a community,” says Mr. Tucker.
Bill has previously been recognized for his work in the area of special education, receiving recognition from the Down’s Syndrome Research Institute and the London Family Court Clinic.
He has written and presented in the areas of domestic and school based anti-violence programs. “It is my goal that we all work together to continue to make excellence a habit on behalf of the students, parents, staff and communities of the Thames Valley District School Board,” he adds.
