Going into an apprenticeship is an ideal choice for students who prefer to learn on the job. An apprenticeship provides on the job training, from three to five years, in a variety of 450 highly skilled technical occupations. An apprentice enters into a working contract with a qualified employer, often in a union shop, in exchange for extensive, supervised technical instruction. This training is supplemented by several short periods in the classroom at a local community college which prepares the apprentice for the examination required to attain a Certificate of Qualification.
