Agreement improves dialogue

An important agreement to improve communications about student accommodation issues was recently signed between the City of St. Thomas and the Thames Valley District School Board.

“This letter of agreement represents a major step toward improving communications and involving municipalities at an earlier stage when we need to examine the future of a school or group of schools,” says TVDSB Chair Joyce Bennett.

Letters of agreement – the first of their kind in Ontario – have also been signed with the Counties of Elgin, Oxford and Middlesex.

“This will allow us the opportunity to work together proactively to discuss challenges and opportunities facing both the City and TVDSB,” says St. Thomas Mayor Heather Jackson, adding the agreement recognizes the importance of communication between the municipality and the school board.

The agreements require talks between the Board and municipalities about issues such as surplus space due to declining enrolment before the establishment of accommodation review committees (ARC).

“We are pleased St. Thomas has joined us in these written commitments to work together for the greatest possible outcome as we consider important decisions that affect students and the communities,” says Bennett, noting that discussions are continuing with the City of London.

“We are grateful to Education Director Bill Tucker for his leadership in the development of these agreements,” Bennett says.
