Roots of Empathy celebrates 10 years

Parents with new babies are invited to consider participating in the award-winning "Roots of Empathy" school program during the 2012-2013 year, which marks the program's tenth anniversary.

Roots of Empathy is an evidence-based classroom program that has shown a significant effect in reducing levels of aggression among school children while raising social/emotional competence and increasing empathy.

The mission of this program is to build caring, peaceful and civil societies through the development of empathy in children and adults.

At the heart of Roots of Empathy is a parent and baby who visit the classroom nine times over the course of the school year. A trained instructor coaches the students to observe the baby’s development and to label the baby’s feeling.

In this experiential learning the baby is the teacher and a catalyst that the instructor uses to help children identify and reflect on their own feelings and the feelings of others.

If you are interested or know of another parent of a baby of who will be two to four months of age by October, 2012, please consider volunteering to participate in this wonderful heart warming program.

You may email Richard te Brinke, School Support Counsellor at Aberdeen and Trafalgar public schools, at r.tebrinke@tvdsb.on.ca.
