“One rarely has an opportunity to be part of a truly significant educational milestone,” says Dr. Al Herrington, a Beal teacher for 27 years and current chair of the 100th Anniversary Committee.
“One hundred years ago the concept of providing vocational and technical courses to young people in a public school system was non-existent,” Harrington says. “It was only Herbert Benson Beal's zeal to expand the scope of educational offerings that the school was founded.”
Registration for weekend events begins Thursday, May 31 at 3 p.m. when alumni are invited to mingle with current staff and students and visit rooms filled with memorabilia from across the decades. A performing arts showcase featuring music, dance and drama starts at 7:30 p.m.
On Friday, returning Raiders will enjoy a multicultural carnival – including the popular dunk tank. Alumni can dunk current staff or one of the special guests, with proceeds going to Beal’s sister school in Nigeria. The day will come to an end with a performance of the musical Hairspray at 7:30 p.m.
Saturday activities include a unique car show featuring the best work from Bealtech’s transportation department over the years. Alumni sports games are scheduled, with the new outdoor football scoreboard unveiled at 1 p.m. A gala dance at 6:30 p.m. with a live band will take guests on a musical trip through each era of Beal’s history.
The reunion weekend continues Sunday with a concert at 11:15 a.m. featuring renowned jazz vocalist Denise Pelley, award-winning Elvis impersonator Matt Martin, the Lester B. Pearson singers and other acclaimed musical talents.
The weekend will conclude with the launch of the annual Bealart year-end show, which runs June 2 to 4, featuring visual art created by this year’s students.
