“One rarely has an opportunity to be part of a truly significant educational milestone,” says Dr. Al Herrington, a Beal teacher for 27 years and current chair of the 100th Anniversary Committee.
“One hundred years ago the concept of providing vocational and technical courses to young people in a public school system was non-existent,” Harrington says. “It was only Herbert Benson Beal's zeal to expand the scope of educational offerings that the school was founded.”
Registration for weekend events begins Thursday, May 31 at 3 p.m. when alumni are invited to mingle with current staff and students and visit rooms filled with memorabilia from across the decades. A performing arts showcase featuring music, dance and drama starts at 7:30 p.m.
On Friday, returning Raiders will enjoy a multicultural carnival – including the popular dunk tank. The day will come to an end with a performance of the musical Hairspray at 7:30 p.m.
Saturday activities include a unique car show featuring the best work from Bealtech’s transportation department over the years. Alumni sports games are scheduled, with the new outdoor football scoreboard unveiled at 1 p.m. A gala dance at 6:30 p.m. with a live band will take guests on a musical trip through each era of Beal’s history.
The reunion weekend continues Sunday with a concert at 11:15 a.m. featuring renowned jazz vocalist Denise Pelley, award-winning Elvis impersonator Matt Martin, the Lester B. Pearson singers and other acclaimed musical talents.
The weekend will conclude with the launch of the annual Bealart year-end show, which runs June 2 to 4, featuring visual art created by this year’s students.
