The campaign was held throughout Education Week and was capped off by a special ‘Walk for Addie’ event in honour of student Adrit (Addie) Batra.
Addie came to London to access medical treatment for DMD and has found a welcoming community at Lord Elgin, says Vice Principal Bruce Dunn.
During his visit, Davidson described his remarkable journey with his son, Jesse, who lost his battle with DMD in 2009 at the age of 29.
In 1995, Jesse, with his father pushing his wheelchair, travelled 3,300 kilometres across Ontario to raise research dollars to fight DMD. $1 million was raised on the “Jesse's Journey” Ontario trek.
In 1998, a further $2 million dollars was contributed by Canadians from coast to coast when John walked over 8,000 kilometres across Canada for "Jesse's Journey, a Father's Tribute".
As a result, Jesse Davidson Laboratories have been established across North America for DMD research.
Davidson spoke from the heart as he told stories about other kids just like Addie who have DMD disease. Then, Addie then spoke about his own journey from India to Canada to work with doctors in London.
Lord Elgin joined many schools that took part in Jesse’s Journey events, particularly in May, which is Defeat Duchenne Month for the organization.
In 2011, fundraising events during the month of May, including the Walk Across Canada in a Day, raised nearly $200,000 for research.
