The conference focused on exploring the issue of attendance among FNMI students and discussions were facilitated by TVDSB’s First Nations, Métis and Inuit Student Advisory Council.
"We were extremely impressed by the leadership shown by the student facilitators and also with the depth of responses from FNMI students around attendance issues," said FNMI Education Advisor Robyn Turgeon.
Student responses describing some of the challenges faced by FNMI students are currently being reviewed and collated for the purpose of making system-level recommendations for reducing student absentee rates.
"Student participants in the conference will receive our report and recommendations to show them how their voices really do help to affect positive change in our Board," Turgeon emphasized.
