12th Annual TVDSB Art Festival

FRIDAY, MAY 10, 2013         MUSIC - BANDS

Eleven elementary schools from across Thames Valley have registered to participate. The schools are bringing their bands or instrumental classes to participate in the program held in the Thames Room at the Education Centre, 1250 Dundas St. E. London, N6A 5L1, 519-452-2000.

There are five or six schools in each half day. Ensembles perform two selections for their peers and for adjudication from two clinicians. The clinicians give positive feedback and suggestions that the groups can use to improve their performance. It is a non-competitive festival.

During the second half the morning or afternoon session, all of the schools get together and work on a new piece as a mass band. The piece this year is “Castle Gate, 1924” and is exciting and offers some challenges to the young players. The clinicians work through the piece and then have a final performance.

Parents are welcome to attend and watch the performances. The morning session begins at 9:30 a.m. and the afternoon session begins at 12:45 p.m.

MONDAY, MAY 6, 2013        VISUAL ART

The focus for this half-day session will be on print making. Teachers from various schools have selected five students to attend, ranging from Grades 5-8. Lead by Peter Bates, Department Head of Visual Arts at Oakridge Secondary School, the students will create a design, cut it into lino and then print it. This workshop will give students an opportunity to learn a new technique and create their own print. The workshop begins at 9:00 a.m. and is being held in the Thames Room. Parents are welcome to attend.
