Oxbow student wins reporting job of a lifetime
Monday, Sept. 17, 2012 – Thirteen-year-old Jonathan Gray’s charisma and care for animals has taken him on the adventure of a lifetime. The Grade 8 student took a week off from classes at Oxbow Public School to serve as an “Elephant Reporter” in far away Hua Hin, Thailand after winning an online video contest. In the video, Jonny describes how his family rescues and rehabilitates birds, dogs, cats and other animals on their farm near Ilderton. He also demonstrates his skill in polo on one of the horses rescued by his family. As the winner of the contest, sponsored by Anantara Hotels, Resorts & Spas, Jonny served as the Roving Elephant Reporter for the 11th annual King’s Cup Elephant Polo Tournament in Hua Hin, Thailand from Sept. 12 - 16, 2012. While still in Thailand, Jonny said that interaction with the elephants was the most anticipated part of his journey. “I will be doing veterinary checks on the elephants, which is very exciting, and participating in the elephant buffet where the elephants are given a huge spread of elephant delicacies, which is supposed to be great fun. “I also look forward to viewing the actual polo matches,” he said in an email from Thailand. “Of course being able to experience the beauty and culture in Thailand is a privilege and so exciting.” When Jonny wasn’t covering the action on the polo pitch or mingling with royalty, local celebrities and experienced elephant gurus, he was enjoying an all-expenses-paid stay in Thailand with his mother, Jacquelyn. Their excursions included a visit to the exquisite teak wood palace of love and hope – Maruekhathaiyawan – one of the oldest and most treasured royal palaces in Thailand, an elephant trek through a local vineyard and a kid’s Thai cooking class and an art class.
