Bus on route to fill seats with school supplies
Thursday, August 16, 2012 – While school buses are usually filled with children, the Thames Valley Education Foundation and community partners hope to fill buses with school supplies for students in need. Freedom 55 Financial “Stuff the Bus” events are being held in London on Saturday, August 18 as part of the 12th annual Supplies for Students program. Program Coordinator Chantal McLaughlin recognizes that members of our local community have responded to the needs of children in Elliott Lake – where a mall collapsed making it difficult for parents to buy supplies without travelling about 60 km – but she is optimistic that they will also answer the needs of local children. “Not all parents in Thames Valley can afford to provide their children with everything they need. We are grateful to businesses and individuals who respond with supplies, financial support, their valuable time and much needed services. Every bit of it goes into backpacks that address some basic needs of local families.” What: Freedom 55 Financial Stuff the Bus events * * * * * What: My Big Yellow Bus - School Bus Safety Day * * * * * What: “Stuff the Bus” event, run by Oxford United Way * * * * * Donors may also drop off new school supplies at the following locations until September 2: More than 1,500 backpacks filled with supplies were distributed to needy children across Thames Valley last year. The Foundation staff and volunteers hope to once again meet the need. Parents who need backpacks for their children are asked to request them from their school principal.
