Students honoured with Lawson Literary Awards

Monday, June 11, 2012 – Fifteen elementary students will be honoured for their writing skills at the 34rd annual Lawson Literary Awards ceremony at the Education Centre tomorrow night (Tuesday, June 12) at 6:30 p.m.

The purpose of the award is to encourage students in Grades 7 and 8 to research and write about a Canadian topic of interest.

Entries this year range from an exploration of The Canadian Identity to the role of the Canadian Infantry during World War II, as well as a closer look at The Infamous Battle for Caen.

One student took a personal journey back into her own family history, recalling the glory days of great-great-uncle Ray Getliffe: A Local Hero – the former NHLer credited with giving Maurice “Rocket” Richard his nickname.

The Lawson Literary Awards have a long and distinguished history. Sponsored by the family of the late Colonel Tom Lawson, the awards have been associated with the TVDSB and its predecessor London board since 1978.

Colonel Lawson developed the program in the name of his father, the Honourable Ray Lawson, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario from 1946-1952.

The award for each student consists of $100, an award plaque and a bound copy of all Lawson Award winning entries. A reception will be held after the award presentation at the Education Centre for the students and their families.
