Thames Valley students run Relay for Life
Thursday, June 7, 2012 – About 600 A.B. Lucas Secondary School students will be running all night long this Friday with the goal of raising $85,000 for Relay for Life – the largest goal ever set by the school and possibly the largest fundraising goal set by any TVDSB school. The motto for the event is: "The drive for $85,000. Why not? The Viking Nation making a difference." Teacher advisor Michael Hayes says he knows the goal is “a monster” but he believes his Vikings will succeed. “We have a lot of kids whose parents are directly affected by the disease. It's really an incredible evening but there are a lot of tears, too. You don't wish it on anyone, so it's our chance to do what we can. These kids never fail to amaze at Lucas,” Hayes says proudly. Lucas is in good company among Thames Valley schools that have raised significant funds for Relay for Life and other initiatives to support the Canadian Cancer Society, including Sir Frederick Banting Secondary School. In fact, the success of Banting’s Relay for Life event inspired Lucas to set its goal. In a display of friendly rivalry, Hayes says Lucas intends to “beat” Banting’s astounding fundraising total of $84,000, far exceeding the school’s original target of $65,000. Including other cancer fundraisers, Banting has raised more than $95,000 this year for the cause – an achievement Principal Paula Greenberg believes is the most money raised by one school in one year in cancer fundraisers. Greenberg says she was speechless when the Relay for Life total was announced last weekend: “The rain did not dampen our relay spirits as we moved the events indoors with students walking the ‘track’ around the auditorium and grooving to music over the school's PA.” Greenberg adds that the event has special meaning for Banting students, who rallied around Everett, a Grade 10 student who concluded chemotherapy treatment for cancer in April. The Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life is an all-night fundraising event to celebrate the lives of those who are living with cancer, remember loved ones lost to cancer, and fight back against the disease.
