Thames Valley students lead way to safe schools

Tuesday, May 22, 2012 – Fifty-seven student leaders who have taken bold steps to ensure their schools are safe and tolerant places to learn will be recognized by the Thames Valley District School Board at the Student Leadership in Safe Schools Awards on May 23, 2012.

The Awards aim to recognize at least one male and one female student from each high school who has shown leadership and commitment in supporting Safe Schools programming in a variety of ways.

Education Director Bill Tucker says he is proud of the achievements of the Safe Schools initiative and attributes much of its success to student leaders.

“Our Safe Schools student leaders have sometimes put themselves on the line in supporting what might not be the most popular point of view,” Tucker says, adding that this year 27 of 28 TVDSB high schools have submitted nominations, representing tremendous pride in our schools and in our student leaders.

Appropriately, the guest speaker was once a student leader. In high school, Scott Hamell’s ability to inspire, encourage and entertain his fellow students led to his repeated election to his school’s students’ council. Since graduating from high school, he has been developing his skills as a magician, hypnotist, entertainer and motivational speaker.

Over the years, TVDSB has worked hard to develop Safe Schools strategies and programs to educate students. Student leaders attend conferences, participate on committees, volunteer in our community, mentor their peers and appear in drama presentations.

TVDSB thanks the following sponsors for their support of the Student Leadership in Safe Schools Awards:
• The Centre for Children and Families of the Justice System
• CAMH Centre for Prevention Science – The Fourth R
