Award of Distinction honours commitment to public education

Tuesday, May 8, 2011 – The 12th annual Award of Distinction ceremony will recognize 20 recipients from across the Thames Valley school district for their extraordinary work and outstanding commitment to public education.

“The educational experience in schools across Thames Valley is enriched by the contributions of staff, community members and of the students themselves,” says Superintendent Karen Edgar, chair of the Award of Distinction committee.

“The Award of Distinction is a way to thank those who go above and beyond to make our system better.”

This year, more than 250 staff and family members are expected to attend the award ceremony on Thursday, May 10 at 7 p.m. – one of the annual highlights of Education Week.

“I am humbled by the selfless dedication of so many individuals and realize just how many people go above and beyond the call of duty for our students because it is the right thing to do,” says Toni Wilson, a Safe Schools learning coordinator who will receive the award this year.

The ceremony will feature tributes highlighting the contributions of each recipient, as well as 19 nominees who will also be recognized. The Lord Dorchester Secondary School Senior and Stage Bands with conductor Janice Perrier will provide music for the event.

The Award of Distinction was established by Trustees in 2000 to members of our school communities who have modelled the board’s foundation principles and have made a significant difference in improving student learning.

“It is important for us to recognize those who give so much to our dynamic community. Those recognized by the award remind us that everyone can play a role in the success of our students,” says Education Director Bill Tucker.
