Thames Valley students try to Change the World
Thursday, April 19, 2012 – Students at schools across the Thames Valley school district are making big changes with small acts of volunteerism. The ChangeTheWorld: Ontario Youth Volunteer Challenge, now in its fifth year, challenges young people to see how many hours they can contribute a minimum of three hours (or more!) as volunteers during a three-week period. As a bonus, the hours count toward their community involvement hours needed to graduate high school. “When the students have a choice to participate with their own ideas, they’re keener to take part and be successful,” says Nicole St. John of London’s Pillar Nonprofit Network, who has visited several schools to help students get excited about volunteer opportunities. Delivered in partnership with the Ontario Volunteer Centre Network, this year's campaign will involve 25 volunteer centres across the province in more than 450 communities for students between the ages of 14 to 18. The 2012 target is to get 25,000 students volunteering. At Woodstock Collegiate Institute, a leadership class is organizing a clothing drive for Goodwill Industries, while students at London’s Ross Secondary School in London are attending a Volunteer Fair with representatives from community organizations. Some Ross students are also volunteering at nearby Northbrae Public School. In the spirit of friendly competition, students at Sir Wilfrid Laurier Secondary School and Sir Frederick Banting Secondary School have initiated a homeroom challenge. Students at other Thames Valley schools will be participating in a number of volunteer activities such as London Clean & Green, collecting donations for Goodwill Industries, delivering promotional materials for Block Parent Program, helping to assemble materials for London Composts, and supporting the Thames Valley Children’s Centre as volunteers for the Forest City Road Race. Schools not currently registered to take the challenge may contact St. John to sign up at any time throughout the campaign.
