42nd London District Science and Technology Fair this weekend

Wednesday, March 28, 2012 – Students from more than 18 schools across the region will present innovative science projects at the 42nd annual London District Science and Technology Fair starting Friday in London.

The fair, which features projects by more than 180 students from Grades 4 to 12, takes place at Althouse College, home of the Faculty of Education at Western University.

The fair is organized by a group of committed teachers, researchers and retired scientists. TVDSB Learning Supervisor Janine Pitman says participating students model scientific investigation in their projects. “It showcases the processes of inquiry in science and models much of the work of scientists.”

Projects will be judged by more than 100 local scientific, industry and educational leaders on Saturday, March 31 from 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m., followed by public viewing until 3:30 p.m. A special awards ceremony will be held on Sunday, April 1 from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. with opening remarks by Dr. Margaret McNay, Associate Dean, Western Faculty of Education and Janine Pitman, Learning Supervisor at the Thames Valley District School Board.

Ten winning students will represent London at the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Charlottetown in May: http://cwsf.youthscience.ca/fairs/current.

Additional special prizes will be presented, such as: the Environmental Innovator Award, and the Research Western Imagination Prize and many more.

In 2011, London district students went on to win awards at the Canada-Wide Science Fair, as well as the National Sanofi-Aventis BioTalent Challenge. Previous winners have also gone on to be recognized in the Top 20 under 20 program sponsored by Youth in Motion (www.top20under20.ca).
