TVDSB announces major United Way donation
Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2012 – United Way agencies of Elgin-St. Thomas, London-Middlesex and Oxford received a record $346,703 donation from staff and students of Thames Valley District School Board. Despite challenging economic times, donations surpassed this year’s campaign target of $345,000. In all, staff and students have donated more than $2.3 million to the United Way over the last eight years. Superintendent Karen Dalton, a member of the United Way of London-Middlesex board of directors, says there are daily reminders of the very real and increasing needs of many Thames Valley families. “Unemployment has resulted in greater demands on the agencies and services that United Way supports and Thames Valley employees and students have once again raised funds to contribute to the United Ways in our region,” says Dalton. Director of Education Bill Tucker is pleased the Board’s campaign reached – and exceeded – its fundraising goal. “All of our school communities benefit greatly from organizations supported by the United Way,” says Director Tucker. “We know the money raised provides important services for our students, families and staff.” During the presentation, certificates of recognition were presented to Thames Valley staff members who played key roles in the success of this year’s campaign. Students raised funds through various activities including the United Way Stair Climb and the annual United Way football games. More than 80 per cent of the total is raised through staff payroll contributions. The funds will be divided among the three United Way agencies based on where the money was contributed so that the agencies across Thames Valley can help to meet local needs.
