Thames Valley’s Senior Administration presented a draft five-year Capital Plan to Trustees at the Regular Board meeting on Tuesday, February 28, 2006.

Prepared with the goal of providing excellence in programming and learning opportunities for students, the "Good Places To Learn - Renewing Ontario's Schools" submission to the Ministry of Education proposes changes to Thames Valley’s accommodations to address a variety of issues including:

  • Growth areas in several communities that require new schools
  • Increased demand for French Immersion programs across the system
  • Aging buildings that will be extremely costly to maintain or repair
  • Declining enrolment that will account for the loss of approximately 10,000 students between 1999 and 2013 (Thames Valley currently maintains over 15,000 empty pupil spaces in its buildings)
  • Facility and program expansions to provide equal access and opportunities for all students, and to meet program expectations
  • Specific requirements related to Ministry of Education and Government of Ontario priorities including the Best Start Program, Ontario Disabilities Act, and other initiatives

Thames Valley’s Capital Plan Steering Committee was authorized by the Board of Trustees in September, 2005, to begin work on a long-term capital plan as part of the provincial government’s Good Places to Learn initiative. The plan will be sent to the Ministry of Education for review by Minister of Education Gerard Kennedy. Upon review, it will be returned to Trustees for debate and decision – a process that will include formal public input.
