NEWS/ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Congratulations to Micah Vail!

On Friday, January 11, 2013, Micah’s personal essay on the important role of horseback riding in his life was published nationally in the Globe and Mail. It was entitled "Riding to Victory" and can be found under Facts and Arguments in the Life and Arts Section. Staff are very proud of Micah’s achievement. It was a pleasure to read his insightful essay.

Actor Skye Brandon took time away from his performances at the Stratford Festival Theatre
to work with students in Ms. Hardy's English
classes.  Pictured here with Grade 11
University Preparation student Hailey Jamieson.

Find your voice volunteering

In Grade 9, Mohammed (Moe) Eid stepped out of his comfort zone by volunteering and never looked back.
He began voicing his commitment to the community through Safe Schools. This program uses Forum Theatre, an interactive theatre technique, to encourage students to put conflict resolution skills into practice. Eid enjoys this volunteer work because it empowers students to speak up and out against abuse.

Originally, Moe did not take on a leadership role – he was just happy to be on stage. However, the more he volunteered the faster his confidence grew. Now he is a senior actor and helps newcomers feel comfortable performing on stage. Moe explains why his role with Safe Schools is so rewarding: “The volunteering I do in school expands into the community to create positive change.”

It is important to start volunteering early. Don’t wait for the deadline to accumulate the 40 hours needed for high school graduation. Moe says that even more than meeting the requirement, contributing is important – especially for shy Grade 9 [students].

“You will gain recognition for your positive traits.” This recognition will open doors to new and exciting opportunities. Like Moe, you will quickly find yourself being looked up to as a source of inspiration and support. Eid wants other students to know that whatever they contribute will be valued. “You don’t have to go out and run a marathon; even the smallest good deeds will be noticed,” he explains.

Moe’s inspiration to start getting involved came from his family. Initially, his mother and cousin urged him to try new things through volunteering. Eid is thankful that they encouraged him to take that leap of faith. He advises parents to “encourage their kids to get involved. Parents can set an example by volunteering, too.”

Moe continues to volunteer because he loves his extended family at Westminster. He actively participates on students’ council to improve the student experience and he promotes involvement in a wide range of community projects. Despite his busy schedule, Eid says, “Knowing I am creating positive change provides me with the satisfaction and motivation to keep getting involved, and keep trying to make a difference.”

Ready to stand out in your community? Make some noise with Pillar Nonprofit Network and the ChangeTheWorld Ontario Youth Volunteer Challenge. This province-wide campaign runs from April 21 to May 20. Youth ages 14-18 will discover their passions by contributing to communities through a variety of fun-filled events. Please visit www.pillarnonprofit.ca for more information.
