Dear Parents and Guardians of Gr. 4-8 students:
Our school is holding Track and Field on Thursday May 9th, 2013. Our rain-date is Wed. May 15th. We will begin at 9:30 and end at 3:30. Please send a normal lunch, as we will be breaking at our regular times (11:10 and 1:30). Our Gr. 8 Grad Committee will have a snack booth available, so students can bring along some money if they wish to purchase small peanut-free treats or refreshments. Students are encouraged to dress for the weather, wear sunscreen, bring extra water and label these bottles. If the weather looks like rain, please send along an umbrella and a raincoat. We only have one rain-date, so unless there is lightning, we will do our best to run the events on Thursday, May 9th.
If you are concerned, please check either our school website http://www.tvdsb.on.ca/Southwold.cfm or the Parent Council Facebook page for updated plans. This will help keep our phone lines free for emergencies. You are invited to cheer on your children, but I do ask that you respect the school’s safety and security needs. The East Parking lot is closed to guests. Parents may park in the bus compound 9:45-3:15. As the gate from the bus compound to our playground is always locked during the school day, parents are able to enter through our front door to sign in. Please follow the signs to the south yard to watch the competition. Thank you for your cooperation with this safety rule. On the Track and Field Day, guests are asked to AVOID WALKING ACROSS THE SHORT TRACK ON THE SOUTH PAVEMENT. Parents are also asked to stay out of the short track area, near the timers. This helps us to do our best job for all! We will have cleared this area of stones and need to keep it clear at all times for the safety of our runners. Please watch for signs which will help you find the events. A schedule of events will be posted on our website and will also be sent home early next week with each gr. 4-8 student.
Because this event involves a lot of children, we are running the longer events in advance of our school meet. On Friday May 3rd, the Gr. 8 students will compete in the 1500m race at 10:30. Grades 5-7 students will compete in the 1500 M at 11:50 (running alternate girls/ boys’ races) until 1:30.
On Monday May 6th, we will run the 800 m race for grade 4-8 starting at 9:45. All gr. 4-8 classes will be invited out to cheer their classmates on that have signed up to compete during these advance times.
If you would like to volunteer as a “Greeter”, I would be happy to hear from you. Your role would be to welcome parents and direct them to sign in and arrive safely to the meet. This is a great way for grand-parents to assist, so if anyone is interested, please contact me at 519-631-5997 X 46161. Thanks to our staff and volunteers, for organizing this school-wide event. Students who qualify for the Regional Track and Field Meet will be going to Parkside on May 21st (22nd rain-date).
Best wishes to all of our students as they enjoy our Track and Field season!
