Sherwood Forest Code of Conduct Rationale for a Code of Conduct
A common code of conduct is the foundation for developing positive behaviours in the learning environment. The code embodies respect of self, others and property and is based on freedom from the following:
- conduct which endangers self and others
bullying behaviours disrespectful behaviour towards people or property profane or inappropriate language disruption of the learning environment At Sherwood Forest Public School, we are committed to a respectful, safe and violence-free learning environment. To this end, we have adopted the theme of an Archer, where the word Archers is an acronym for Academics, Respect, Co-operation, Honesty, Empathy, Responsibility and Sportsmanship. This code is applied within the school and beyond, including school activities, trips around the community or wherever the school is represented.
Standards of Behaviour
Students must:
- arrive on time and report to the office when late
- stay on school property in designated supervised areas, including those students who stay for lunch
- be prepared for learning with proper books and materials
- complete class and homework assignments and projects to the best of their ability
- seek extra help when required to promote learning or to resolve conflict
- use Internet only with permission and under the direct supervision of a staff member
- ensure school communications are shared with parents/guardians
- refrain from gum chewing in school
- follow posted rules when riding on the school bus
- follow posted lunchroom rules when staying for lunch
- walk bicycles on school property & lock them at the bike rack
- leave skateboards, scooters, roller blades, MP3 players/iPods, cell phones & video games at home unless by specific arrangements with staff/administration & parents/guardians
Everyone in the school community must:
- promote a safe environment that is conducive to learning
- demonstrate respect for all people equally
- refrain from the use of physical or verbal aggression & abuse
- not engage in bullying behaviours
- show proper care and regard for all school property and property of others
- take appropriate measures to help those in need
- refrain from using profane or inappropriate language
- refrain from throwing potentially harmful objects (e.g., snowballs, stones)
- follow posted rules when riding on the school bus
- wear appropriate clothing and adhere to the dress code
Safety
Everyone must follow the rules and laws of society and must not: - engage in physical, verbal or bullying behaviour harmful to others
- engage in vandalism
- encourage others to harm another person
Dress Code
Sherwood Forest Public School allows for personal choice while maintaining a respectful environment conducive to learning and teaching.
- footwear, clothing and accessories must be appropriate for safe participation in all types of school activities (e.g., running shoes with non-marking soles for physical education)
- indoor shoes must be worn at all times in case of evacuation
- students are expected to wear clothing that depicts appropriate language and/or graphics (i.e.; no weapons, profanity, discriminatory, derogatory or sexually suggestive images or remarks)
undergarments shall be covered revealing clothing is not permitted (e.g., midriffs shall be covered) hats shall be removed upon entering school Behavioural Consequences
Consequences for inappropriate behaviour will be progressive. They will be logical and appropriate to the offence. Since individual circumstances will surround each situation, the consequences applied may vary. Of utmost importance is the necessity for ongoing support from the home. Possible consequences are as follows:
- discussion and counselling with a TVDSB staff member
- parent or guardian contact
- time out within the classroom or outside of the classroom
- a written explanation/apology
- removal of school privileges (e.g., field trips or extracurricular opportunities, bus or lunchroom privileges)
- restitution (e.g., monetary payment or clean-up)
- removal from classroom
- police involvement
- suspension (activities leading to: threats, harm, bullying, vandalism, swearing at a person of authority or any illegal activity leading to police involvement)
- expulsion
