GRADE NINE MUSIC COURSES

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC   Grade 9, (Open) AMU 1O1

This program is intended to develop students’ understanding and appreciation of music through practical skills and creative work. Through this program, students will find a source of enjoyment, personal satisfaction, and also gain creative problem-solving skills, individual and cooperative work habits, knowledge of themselves and others, a sense of personal responsibility, and connections to their community and future careers. The expectations for music courses are organized into 3 distinct, but related strands:

STRANDS

CONTENT

Theory

The study of theory involves learning the symbols, concepts, and conventions used in music. Students will be able to converse and express themselves using appropriate musical terminology. Students will complete a theory level equivalent to a Royal Conservatory Preliminary exam.

Creation

Creative work involves the application of performance skills and knowledge of theory as they relate to the performance medium, as well as compositions. Student will play, individually and in ensembles using a variety of performance techniques. They will improvise, interpret, and compose music, using a variety of media, including computers.

Analysis

This involves listening to live or recorded performances to understand the language of music, its historical and cultural context, and how effectively its composers and performers communicate with their audience. The music analyzed will be drawn from a range of cultures.

 

VOCAL MUSIC   Grade 9, (Open) AMV 1O1

This course emphasizes the performance of music at an intermediate level that strikes a balance between challenge and skill. It builds on the skills learned in AMU 2O1.Student learning will include participating in creative activities and perceptive listening. Students will continue to increase their understanding of the elements of music while developing their technical and creative abilities. This is accomplished in three strands:

This includes the baroque, classical, romantic periods, popular music, and Canadian and non-Western music. Students will perform technical exercises and appropriate repertoire. Complete detailed creative activities, and analyze and evaluate live and recorded performances. They will continue to increase their understanding of the elements of music while developing their technical and creative abilities, gaining creative problem-solving skills, individual and cooperative work habits, knowledge of themselves and others, a sense of personal responsibility, and connections to their communities and future careers. By the end of this course, the student will demonstrate an understanding of the elements of music in relation to the baroque, classical, and romantic periods. They will also demonstrate the ability to notate difficult rhythm patterns, melodies, and chords accurately through listening and will demonstrate an understanding of concepts required in the use of musical and audio editing software. Students will complete a theory level approaching a Royal Conservatory Grade Two exam.

Creation

By the end of this course the student will perform music appropriate for the course with accuracy and artistic sensitivity, demonstrate mastery of technical skills appropriate for the course, perform music appropriate for the course with accuracy and artistic sensitivity, demonstrate mastery of technical skills appropriate for the course; compose and/or arrange musical works, showing an understanding of the creative process and making appropriate use of technology.

Analysis

By the end of this course, students will analyze and evaluate musical works, demonstrating an understanding of some major characteristics of baroque and classical music, popular music, and Canadian and non-Western music; identify, analyze, and evaluate musical works through listening, analyze musical works and performances of works, demonstrating an understanding of the process of critical analysis; analyze the relationship between music and its cultural context; demonstrate an understanding of possibilities for post-secondary studies and for careers related to music.

This course emphasizes the appreciation, analysis, and performance of music with an emphasis on music for the stage. It will involve a comprehensive history starting with early operettas to the present musical theatre genre. Students will concentrate on developing interpretive skills and the ability to work independently. They will also complete complex independent study projects.

By the end of the course, students will perform music appropriate for the course with accuracy, fluency, and sensitivity to the musical style; demonstrate mastery of technical skills appropriate for the course, compose and/or arrange musical works, showing an understanding of the creative process; use music technologies appropriately in composing, editing, and performing, and in distributing their creative work.
