From the Principal’s Pen

As we begin the month of November, we face some typical Canadian changes; the clocks fall back so that we have more daylight in the morning but our days get dark very early.  The weather is getting cold and snow is not far away.  During this time, we ask parents to ensure that their child(ren) dresses appropriately.  Bringing warms coats, mittens, hats and boots is necessary to keep everyone safe and warm.  Please think about sending extra mittens and even socks and pants for those days when  we get a little wet.  Our student are out for 20-40 minutes twice a day so be sure that they are prepared.

We are very busy at Oxbow with intramural soccer, cross country just ending and volleyball starting.  In addition, we have many students involved in the Artist Guild, and taking on extra jobs in the school.  We would like to thank all the staff and students for the hard work they put into each day.  This Thursday was our first S.T.A.R. assembly (Success Through Accepting Responsibility).  It was wonderful to see so many parents present at this recognition ceremony.  Academics and citizenship are both important concepts at our school and we take pride in making time to recognize the achievements of our students.  Way to go this set of S.T.A.R.S.!

Parents!  Want to get involved?  Come on out to our next School Council/Home and School meeting on Wednesday, November 25 at 7:00 p.m. in the school Library.  New members are welcome.

 Vice Principal’s Updates:

As you read this newsletter, you will probably be reaching for one of those delicious Halloween treats that you bought for this special day or secretly took out of your children’s stash!!  This is a great time to tell you that Oxbow Public School received the Bronze Award for being ‘Healthy Living Champions’ for the 2008-2009 school year.  The ‘Healthy Living Champions’ Award is given to elementary schools in Middlesex-London for their outstanding commitment to physical activity and the promotion of Healthy eating.  Seventy-six elementary schools in London and Middlesex received this award last year for either the Gold, Silver or Bronze category.  We have a Healthy and Safe School Team made up of several students, Ms Mears (teacher rep), Mrs. Sheila Hattie Miller (school nurse) and Mr. Armstrong.  We welcome any student who would like to join as well as any parents.  We are going for the  Gold Award this year!  We have planned a variety of fun activities to promote healthy food choices and physical activity. Friday, October 30th, is Orange Day.  Students are asked to bring an orange fruit or vegetable in their lunch that day.  If they do they will receive a GOTCHA and will enter it in a draw.   Wednesdays will be walking Wednesdays.  Students who walk 5 laps around the perimeter of the school yard will receive a GOTCHA for their efforts and can also enter it into the draw.   This is a perfect time to ask you to remind your children to frequently wash their hands, especially before each Nutrition Break.  Hope to see many of you come out to our next Parent Council Meeting.
