Everyone is encouraged to work together in order to support all students in endeavoring to achieve their “personal best” in all aspects of Language and Mathematics. Strong Literacy and Numeracy skills increase student success in all academic areas. Personal success helps to create positive and motivated students in all aspects of school and community life. Communication between home and school is key for experiencing a successful school year. This student planner is an effective tool for maintaining consistent communication with respect to homework, projects, school events and notices needing parent and staff attention. Please check your child’s planner on a regular basis. Excessive absence results in poor school work. When an absence is necessary, the parent or guardian should notify the school. If this is not done, the school secretary will phone home to determine the whereabouts of the student. Notes are required for early dismissal and after an illness (unless you call). For the safety of your children, no children will be released without a written request or a prior phone call. They will also not be released to anyone not listed as a contact for them so please make sure we have current contact information on file at the school. Your cooperation and understanding are appreciated. MEDICATION AT SCHOOL Prescription medication cannot be administered at school without an authorization form signed by the physician and parent. This applies to medication by school staff as well as medication self-administered by the student. These forms are updated each year. Please contact the school immediately if your child requires medication during school hours. The well being and safety of all students depend on adherence to this Board policy. Code of Behaviour The following general expectations for student behaviour are provided for your information and attention. We would ask that as parents you assist us by reviewing these items with your child (ren) from time to time. By working together, we can endeavour to ensure that common sense, order and courtesy prevail in the school environment. Behaviour Code: 1. Behave in a way that will make our school a pleasant, friendly place. Smile. Remember to use good manners at all times. 2. Help keep our building and playground neat and tidy. No gum chewing in the school building is permitted. Care for books, supplies and equipment. Vandalism of school property will not be tolerated. 3. Be polite. Show respect for others. Co-operate with your teachers, occasional teachers, support staff, office staff, volunteers, bus drivers and other students. 4. Use non-offensive words. Profanity, verbal abuse, racial and prejudicial comments are unacceptable. 5. Obey the bus driver and all bus rules. 6. Respect the rights to personal safety. The progressive discipline policy is used for fighting or other forms of violence including bullying. Possession or the use of dangerous weapons is strictly prohibited. 7. Rules pertaining to student behaviour are in affect for any school event including those held before or after school hours. These events include, but are not limited to, activities beyond normal school hours, teams, clubs, field trips and school transportation. 8. Promote a healthy environment. Smoking on school property or buses is strictly prohibited. Drug and/or alcohol use or possession is strictly prohibited. 9. Stay on school premises. Students may not leave without official permission. 10. No student or groups shall cause any other student to be subjected to any form of harassment, threats or intimidation. A student’s sharing of information to a teacher/staff, will be treated as “serious” and as such, the principal will be informed and determine appropriate interventions. 11. Any conduct that subjects a student to mental stress including bullying and teasing, will also be considered to be a serious offence. They are acts of aggression and often involve groups of children. Since this is a complex issue, it will be addressed through curriculum and staff counseling, as well as appropriate consequences. 1. Dress in clothing appropriate for school. 2. Clothing should be neat, clean and in good repair, non-distracting and non-offensive. Messages and graphics on t-shirts should be appropriate for our entire school community. 3. All shirts, tops or pants must not expose midriff and tank tops should have straps that are at least three fingers in width. *** Items of clothing such as tube tops, bathing suits, spaghetti straps, crop tops and short shorts are not acceptable. If clothing is deemed inappropriate the student will be asked to change. 4. Hats, boots, bandanas and sunglasses are considered outside wear. 5. Shoes must be on a student’s feet at all times. Students do require a pair of indoor shoes to be left here at school. Students who wear sandals to school will need to have running shoes to change into for gym class. 6. Due to allergies please do not wear any heavy scented perfumes, cologne/after shave, body scent spray, etc. to school. 7. Excessive jewelry for males and females such as large link chains can be a safety hazard. They are not appropriate for school. 8. ELECTRONIC DEVICES such as cell phones, ipods, video games, cameras Bicycles, Skateboards, Scooters, Rollerblades & “Heelie” Shoes: 1. Bicycles must be parked in the designated bike rack area. Helmets are the rules of the road and must be worn when riding to and from school. 2. Bicycles, skateboards, scooters and rollerblades are not to be ridden directly onto school property. 3. It is strongly recommended that bikes be locked. 4. “Heelie” shoes (or any shoes with wheels) are not to be worn on the school property. 5.
