February 18, 2011 - Byron Somerset P.S. Students Show Appreciation at TVEF's 10th Annual General Meeting

At the Thames Valley Education Foundation's Annual General Meeting on February 16th, students from Mrs. Russell's grade eight class at Byron Somerset P.S. provided a fast paced demonstration of sport stacking. Funding to purchase the sport stacking kits for the class was provided through a grant from the Foundation's Learning Enhancement Fund which was established in 2008. Mrs. Russell's class expressed their gratitude for the Foundation's gift and provided hands on instruction to the Board Members, including James Stewart (pictured).

Sport stacking has been shown to encourage and develop cooperation, perseverance, hand-eye coordination and ambidexterity. Teachers have found sport stacking to be effective when used before teaching difficult concepts to students to 'wake up the brain'.

Also in attendance to thank the TVEF Board of Directors were secondary students from the Gifted Program that are using their grant from the Learning Enhancement Fund for the Spark! Conference in early May.  Under the leadership of Gifted Itenerant Teacher, Sean Mattys, the Spark! Conference will feature a variety of seminars and workshops that will "spark" an interest in these future leaders.

September 8, 2010 - Supplies for Students program receives record donations

A record number of backpacks and school supplies were donated this year by individuals and community partners supporting the Thames Valley Education Foundation’s Supplies for Students program.

More than 1,600 backpacks filled with supplies will be distributed to needy children throughout the Thames Valley District School Board this year. More than 6,000 backpacks have been distributed to children across Thames Valley since the program started in 2001.

“We’re particularly delighted by the tremendous support from volunteers, who have given their own time to ensure that our students have what they need to start the school year,” said Foundation Executive Director Rena Princis, adding that the supplies will be distributed after a ceremony Wednesday to announce the results of this year’s campaign.

Parent volunteers were among those who helped collect and sort donations of backpacks and supplies at various locations throughout Thames Valley. Their efforts were greatly assisted by community partners such as the Kiwanis and business partners such as TD Canada Trust, Freedom 55 Financial and London Life, Costco, Staples, Tupperware Canada, Argyle Mall and Westmount Shopping Centre.

The Foundation, one of the fastest growing public education foundations in Ontario, works to build partnerships in the community that enrich public education across the Thames Valley district.

“It’s is the Foundation’s vision to actively build partnerships with community groups, local businesses and concerned citizens to enhance educational opportunities for students,” said Foundation President Jan Hunter.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of this year’s program!
